Edge-X optical technology can be integrated into all sorts of fixture designs including radically new shapes. Our optical technology enables new capabilities and with the same unprecedented performance for each application, such as an indirect lighting component for traditional downlight applications.
The Edge-X™ revolution is here
Unprecedented optical control for luminaires,
what the LED has been waiting for...
... an All-in-One optical engine Truly something never before seen. Its goal, to simplify and expand what is possible in the SSL industry. Let us show you. |
What does revolutionary look like?
As example: Edge-X meets the most challenging of applications – Asymmetric Distributions
In action in the real world:
Edge-X™ technologies offers
Better Uniformity
No more eye strain and hotspots with Edge-X luminaires. Modular Optics
Endless possible light distributions with the modular extractor optic. Increasing Comfort
Reduce glare by casting light precisely were it is needed. |
Small Footprint

How does Edge-X work?
Edge-X consist of three optical stages.
Injection. Mixing. Extraction. |
LED injection
Edge-X optical engines are equipped with specialized collecting optics placed in front of each LED. Tailored to photon collection and based on the high performance compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) in the solar industry, this array of precision engineered optics is the key to reaching unmatched optical efficiencies.

Flexible Light Distributions
After the light is extracted, guided, and thoroughly mixed, the light needs to be shaped. This final shaping is where our extractor optic comes in. It's a customizable modular optic. The diverse array of extractor optics allow for a endless possible distributions by Edge-X optical engines.
One optical assembly, many distribution possibilities.
This means easier designs, simpler manufacturing, and lower costs. |

Comfort, Not glare!
Edge-X optical engines dramatically increase eye comfort by providing the world's best uniformity of lighting, AND reducing unwanted glare.
Cast light exactly where it is needed, greatly reducing chances for direct glare. |
Reimagined distributions
Edge-X opens the door for a wide range of possible distributions, from traditional distributions to distributions that reach places traditional luminaires simply could not before.
Every photon is where they need to be with Edge-X. |

Spectral Tuning & Color Mixing
Edge-X™ is the first commercial lighting technology that can produce perfectly mixed color right out of the beam-shaping optic. This near field mixing means no more worrying about how far a surface needs to be away to get perfectly mixed light, or even an LED's color shift over angle.
Reliability and future proofing
Based on well established optical physics, Edge-X can be produced by current well understood manufacturing methods.
Yet it is adaptable and scalable to the future of LEDs and other solid-state sources such as laser diodes. In fact, it is uniquely suited to take advantage of such high intensity sources. As LEDs evolve so can Edge-X, taking continuous advantage of future benefits. |
Edge-X Technologies
With these combined features, not only does Edge-X performance dominate current applications but creates whole new ones...
For the present as well as the future. |
The Edge-X Heritage
QuarkStar is a hybrid of the early HP and Philips Lighting traditions in LED development and solid-state lighting. Senior members of the pioneering LED teams from both companies joined QuarkStar early on, along with their proteges and next generation leading scientists and engineers. They became the QuarkStar LITE (Lighting Innovation Technology and Engineering team).
The core of QuarkStar’s revolutionary insights and developments is based around their original concepts of Advanced Filaments™ as the key for transforming the LED's high-intensity point source of light into a low-glare source uniquely capable of sculpting light in space. The fixture-scale Edge-X technology featured here is one example – being an Edge-Coupled Edge-Extractor Virtual Filament, something never before seen in lighting.
It is also a superb example of the aforementioned creative hybridizaton: for it was the brainchild of two of these younger next generation SSL innovators ... Ingo Speier coming from a Philips background and Bob Gardner from HP. They and many other team members then developed it into the amazing technology that it has become, supported by more than 150 granted patents around the world. And being part of an integrated multi-scale system the Edge-X technology is complementary to and synergetic with QuarkStar's other Advanced Filament™ technologies: Virtual, Asymmetric, and Remote.
