Advanced Light Sources
QuarkStar's Advanced Light Sources solve the fundamental challenge, and opportunity, set by the DOE:
To push luminaire capabilities down to the package level
“[One of the two] emerging opportunity/challenge(s) is the integration of existing and new luminaire functionality into smaller and lighter form factors … pushing some functionality down into the LED package.” US DOE Solid-State Lighting R&D Plan, June 2016 |
Unlike traditional Lambertian packages, QuarkStar's Advanced Light Source (ALS) technology allows one to shape light in a manner similar to the spatial control demonstrated in the Edge-X technology, but at a package level. Luminaire-scale control from a package!
The team that created the Advanced Light Source technologies was led by QuarkStar team member, Dr. Roland Haitz*, of Haitz's Law, along with major contributions by Dr. Peter Stormberg, former CTO of Philips Lighting.
The Advanced Light Source optimizes LED systems from the ground up. By significantly increasing photon efficiency, color performance, and even providing directional control right at the level of the LED, ALS can significantly decrease downstream manufacturing costs.
A new, modular approach to LED package design, the ALS technology is LED agnostic with IP coverage in the US, EU, and China.

Revolutionary Module and Fixture-Like Performance
at the Package Level !
Highest possible efficiencies
Novel packaging approaches and new architectures substantially reduce facilitate first-pass forward extraction and control. Beyond simply reducing backscattering into the LED chip and the surrounding cavity, QuarkStar's Advanced Light Source includes a check valve for light that guides photons out of the package from the instant they are created.
Spatial and beam angle control
ALS technology enables luminaire-like spatial and beam angle control for the shaping of the distribution.
This is similar to the capabilities of QuarkStar's Edge-X technologies, but at an even smaller scale – that of a large package!
High color rendering and uniformity/color prediction and control
The ALS architecture physically optimizes color stability through the lifetime of its use.
In addition, it can make use of the radical new tools QuarkStar has developed for understanding - and subsequently controlling - color performance and stability. You can read about these new tools in our Color Prediction and Control page.
Significantly lower system manufacturing costs
ALS can significantly lower costs for downstream manufacturers.

Additional Advantages of the Advanced Light Source: Efficacy & Economics
Dramatically improves efficiences of downstream luminaire products
Losses at the LED package level are the single largest contributor to the inefficiencies of downstream luminaire products (see above figure). QuarkStar's Advanced Light Sources technology helps solve this by dramatically improving LED package efficiencies.
1st tier performance from LED packages made with 2nd tier LEDs
Enhanced efficacies can make 2nd tier LEDs perform as if they're 1st tier products - but at a lower cost. This also provides a means to go beyond the conventional asymptotic limits of LED package performance that are fast approaching.
