Practice - The Real Post

Alright, I have been meaning to post about how the first practice went for a few days now but I just keep putting it off. No real reason either, just lazy I suppose.

Alright so practice was at The Edge gym on Wednesday and everything was pretty good. It was odd at first because I didn't know anyone there and a bunch of the guys have been playing together for awhile currently. I didn't really get a good feeling for how I was going to fit in but in time I'm sure it'll all work out for the best. It started out with some warming up which I did with the other new guy, he's a pitcher. After that the coach worked with the pitchers while the rest of us kind of mulled around before figuring out what to do. One guy hit balls to us and we fielded them, pretty standard practice stuff. Also everyone took a turn hitting in the cages.

I went ahead and took a turn shagging balls during the fielding exercise as I have decided to work my focus on playing first base. This was pretty much uneventful but I learned that the guys can throw really hard. I also think that my glove doesn't quite fit correctly because the first two fingers on my right hand became swollen and bruised but they are fine now. I'm not sure what I need to do about this but I have some ideas one which includes buying a new glove. The only other major incident was when one of the guys was throwing the ball to me he let go to late and basically threw the ball straight down into my foot. It hit the tip of my big toe and that hurt for awhile but I'm tough and survived that too. I ended up being one of the last to hit and that didn't go as well as it should have. I just need to find a way to get more hitting practice off real pitches but I'm not sure how to go about this.

We got our schedule and talked about adding some extra games in August and September by going up to Millard (or Milford, not sure). I'll see how the season goes before I decide if I want to travel up there to play.

Overall I think it's going to be alright. I don't know if I'll see much game play this season but I'll have fun being on a team and learning from the other guys. Go Dodgers!

Moldovan Little League

(copied from C-bob's Blog)

Here's the description of the program (which can also be read by clicking the link below):

This Peace Corps Partnership Project is a request to fund a one week baseball camp this summer as well as for a team to attend the 2004 European Little League Championship in Poland. At present, there are over 150 youth participating in organized baseball throughout Moldova. Teams are coached by Peace Corps volunteers as well as by Moldovan nationals. Last June, 88 boys and girls between the ages of 12-16 attended camp. This event gave youth in Moldova a chance to participate in something unique and exciting. Yet, having been only the second year in the camp's existence, there was plenty of room to improve the overall quality of camp. For example, there was no access to running water where the kids were staying, and the food could have been better. This time around, we hope to provide more adequate resources to make the camp a more enjoyable experience. Partnership funds are needed to assist with costs for the camp such as food and housing for participants as well as to help with sending participants to the European Championships in Poland.

They still need to raise $5555 for this. This is my own experiment in faith and hope and action. If you read this and think it would be great for those kids to get to play ball, please consider clicking the link and donating 5 or 10 dollars. And then pass the link on. Put it in your blogs and send it to those who might be interested.

Writing

Thanks to everyone for responding to the last post. You guys are great.

So I have a bad case of writer's block and it seems to be affected the blog too. Tonight I sat down to write and felt physically ill and stared at a blank word document for an hour. I gave up, rolled over and watched TV all night. I'm not sure what to do.

I have my first practice tomorrow and I'm pretty excited. I will post more about that after it's over.

Happy Tuesday!
